The Moqueca Baiana is a traditional dish from the State of Bahia, in Brazil. With strong influence from the African Cuisine (note the use of Palm Oil), it became a favorite dish all over the country, not only because of its flavor but also because it is amazingly easy to prepare.

Instead of writing down the recipe in details, I thought it would be nicer to show you the steps in real pictures and let you add your own touch to it. Let me know your thoughts.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup Olive oil

  • 2 onions

  • 4 tomatoes

  • pinches of salt and ground pepper

  • 2 lb medium to large fish steaks (shark in the pictures below)

  • Shrimp (optional)

  • Green Onions

  • 1/2 cup Palm Oil

  • 1 can Coconut milk (optional)

Main Utensil:

1 large clay pot with lid - if clay pot not available, other thick pots that retain heat well (dutch oven, soapstone pot, etc.)

Cooking time: About 40 minutes with lid at medium heat
